Apr. 4 – Nuremberg zoo in Germany and a mail order company present the “Flocke” merchandising collection, with souvenirs featuring the zoo’s polar bear cub.

Nuremberg Zoo is the latest to launch a range of products featuring its most famous furry inhabitant. Fan merchandise is proving to be quite a moneyspinner for zoos, as are the increased ticket sales. Knut, Berlin Zoo’s celebrity polar bear, helped bring in 5 million euros to his home zoo in 2007.

Media buzz bear steps out.

Feb. 29 - At ten weeks of age, little polar bear Flocke (Snowflake) is starting to grow into the the predator she was born to be, keepers and vets at Nuremberg Zoo said in a joint press statement on Friday.

New video footage shows the polar bear girl gnawing one of her cuddly polar bear toys. While feeding from a bottle later, “Flocke” seems to be using her paws and laws quite vigorously. Zoo keepers looking after her stated the 16-pound bear was trying to shred everything in reach, using her teeth and claws more and more in the process. Every day, keepers play with the cub for up to 90 minutes. The zoo vet said in the statement he was very pleased with Flocke’s health and progress. Flocke is due to make her first public appearance at the southern German zoo in April. Flocke was separated from her mother Vera after officials at the Nuremberg zoo became concerned she might harm the cub. Now four keepers at the zoo are taking care of the cub.
